Re: privacy policy comparisons of Twitter, Thread, etc...

Since the app is new, they are missing a lot of features that Twitter has so far. I assume they will eventually have a way to embed a timeline on webpage like Twitter had, with all your latest posts. Not sure.

Right now, other than viewing profiles, there is no web based interface to login to and do anything. It's all through the app.

CNN profile for example:
https://www.threads.net/@cnn

You can copy a link or embed a single post. There is no login button. You can't login there. Everything is on the app, at least for now. No trending section on the app. No hashtags. The app is extremely basic.

When creating a thread on the app, you can type in text and attach photos or videos. I see nothing about live streaming options. The technology exists at Facebook so maybe they will add it eventually. But then it already exists at Facebook, so I don't know. And on Instagram too. You can live stream there it seems, but only through the app. I guess it doesn't hurt to have live streaming on all their sites. Or maybe they'll want to force you to use a different one of their services, or rather in addition. Use them all rather than one. People spend more time having to do stuff in each account at Meta, means more ad money.

I also see one of the Instagram "features" I really hate. You can't get controls on the video to popup and allow you to go back to a certain time in the video. Can't see how long it is. Threads is the same way, only worse so far. You can't even pause a video.

Compare these CNN videos for the same post, just on different social media platforms:

Can't see how long the video is, no way to control the video, not even pause:
https://www.threads.net/t/Cuc-WDLpu7e/

Can't see how long the video is, only thing you can do to it is pause and unpause:
https://www.instagram.com/p/Cuc-NoJJPJi/

Can see how long it is and can navigate to another place in the video.

And apparently you can view a single tweet on Twitter again? Maybe. Then if I click the link to view the profile I can see the top part of the profile, but no tweets. "Something went wrong. Try reloading." it says where tweets you used to appear. Reload the page and it wants you to login. The man really wanted to waste tens of billions of dollars.

O/T

Facebook's privacy is atrocious. There are so many options to set for Facebook alone when it comes to various things in the account, across so many different pages and sections, I never know how to do anything when it comes to that. I looked again just now and everything has been changed around since last time. Probably in the name of keeping it simply. But there might be 100 different pages of settings that are buried here and there. I'm not kidding. I just took a look around since I last looked.

There's also sections I've never seen before. One is:

Audience-based advertising
Advertisers using your activity or information

Advertisers can choose to show their ads to certain audiences. You may see ads because an advertiser has included you in an audience based on your information or off-Facebook activity. Advertisers can use or upload a list of information that we can match to your profile to show or exclude you from seeing certain ads. You can also be included in an audience based on your interactions with an advertiser's website, app or store.
You can view the advertisers whose audiences you have been included in based on your information or activity and decide whether we can show you ads based on this data.

There might be about 150 companies on that list.

Don't 100% know what that is, even after reading the information about it. All these companies submit my personal information to Facebook, maybe randomized, and can tell Facebook whether to target me for ads based on my email and phone number for example. I think I can block from being on a company's list, but I have to do so individually. And these companies are just sharing all this with Facebook already?

These are some of the companies on my list:

CVS
Lowes
PayPal
Walmart
Home Depot
New York Times
Canon

And even the blood donation center I sometimes donate blood at? What?

- Advertisers can upload lists or use lists that other advertisers have uploaded to show you or exclude you from seeing ads. Lists can contain contact information, for example, an email address or phone number, that is hashed so that Facebook does not learn any new identifying information about you. Lists can also contain advertising identifiers instead of contact information. Information from lists is matched against our existing list of users. The identity of matched users is not revealed to the advertiser during the matching process.
- Facebook uses lists that advertisers upload only to match the information to your profile and to deliver ads. Advertisers can use lists to show you more relevant ads or to exclude you from seeing ads that may be less relevant to you. For example, if you're already a member of a gym then the gym could choose to exclude you from seeing ads about becoming a member.
- You can view the advertisers currently using lists, including those that have uploaded a list that other advertisers use to show people ads. You can also control whether or not these lists can be used to show you ads or exclude you from seeing ads.

I guess I'm an idiot, I didn't know it worked like that.

I do find this page funny, that you can view even when not logged in:
https://www.facebook.com/privacy/dialog/does-meta-sell-my-info

Does Meta sell my information?
We never sell your information to advertisers. We take your privacy seriously, both in how we handle your information, and in the transparency and control we give you.
While we don't sell your information, businesses and organizations can collect your activity from their apps and websites and send it to us. You can view the activity we have connected to your account, and disconnect any activity you want.

Lol at "We take your privacy seriously". I don't believe that they don't sell anything, but even if were true they use the data. I didn't realize all these other companies I do business with share my info to Facebook. I never authorized them too other than checking that box everyone checks in which you agree to their terms and conditions. So even if you don't use Facebook, all these companies, like the ones I noted above, are sending your info to Facebook, whether you have an account or not, so they can target, or not target, you for ads if you are on Facebook. And maybe even if not, like using your IP if you happen to come across a Facebook property when not logged into Facebook.

And when Facebook says you can "disconnect any activity you want". I'm not going through 150 different companies, navigating on each one though the screens to maybe disconnect from a list. That doesn't stop them from sending Facebook my info. Facebook just doesn't use it to target ads to me, which I block anyway through various extensions.

So I'm just kind of mad at every company on Earth now.

And I keep navigating through Facebook's settings. I keep coming across more and more things. There might be 100 different pages and a 1,000 different options. I keep finding new stuff. If you look online for help navigating through it all, websites telling you how to change things no longer work because Facebook has changed their interface, which they do a lot when it comes to settings. A whole lot. Every time it seems I go through all of that they've changed everything. And it's in twice as many places as before.

Years ago I tried deleting everything Facebook had on me, and going through all the pages, maybe 200. 100 seems like I'm being kind. I find new things that Facebook still has that I didn't previously delete from many years ago. You have to go through each little option and deleting things at that point in a particular section by bulk if you're lucky. Not lucky, there is no option to do it all at once. You have to manually delete every single item. And sometimes when doing that I get a "Something went wrong. Please try again." message and it won't do what I tell it to. Uhhhhhh! The next time I visit everything will have changed again. Their obvious strategy is make things so confusing no one bothers with it and they can do whatever they want with your data. Sometimes I have thought the European Union has gone overboard on things when it comes to tech companies. Maybe they are on to something after all.

For those that have Facebook, go to the settings. Get lost in all of them. You'll see what I mean. If you get to a screen that you want to come back to, bookmark it, or you may no longer find it again. Or give it long enough and they'll reorganize everything so that the bookmark no longer works. What a business strategy.
