Storms do not just move north because they are strong. Yes, stronger storms fight harder to go poleward, but if they have a powerful ridge pushing them west, they will go west. Dozens of powerful hurricanes have verified this in recent years--Dean, Felix, Emily to name a few more recent ones. Gilbert would be a pretty good example from years ago. Similarly, plenty of weak systems have moved poleward out of the Caribbean. The equation between intensity and path is overblown and completely ignores the significance of ridging to a storm's motion.

The ridge is the factor in Rich's path, not the storm's intensity.
