This, folks, is what has happened to journalism in the 21st century. I see it all the time, as I make my living in journalism, and it's painful to watch my profession crumble brick by brick.
Whoever writes the news headlines for AOL.com, for instance, is either far too young to bear that responsibility or he/she is in the wrong field. I routinely see the internet's most inane headlines and subheads there, on one of the web's most popular news sources--hence my post the other day about their description of El Nino as a "storm."
The reason it is such a problem in this instance is that people who trust their local newspaper, like the Pensacola News Journal, may depend on the information they find there for crucial decisions as a storm approaches. That, in light of the story you posted, is horrifying. |
