Grammar is definitely no fun. Browsers now tell you when something is misspelled in a text area, or even other fields if configured to do so, so that is the extent of what I do when posting on a message board for example.

My grandmother can't hear well so I've kind of been looking into alternatives for things to translate speech into text for when people are talking in a room.

Windows has had built in recognition for a very long time, but it is about to get very integrated with Windows 10's Cortana.

Microsoft also owns Skype and that has a new tool that is really quite good, currently only for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10:

You can actually talk to people in either your language, and see the transcript of the conversation in real time and save it, or actually speak to people in other languages and have it converted to English in real time. It might be something interesting eventually if you ever wanted to talk to someone in the Caribbean for example that didn't speak English. It would be really interesting if somehow you could switch the webcam source to a video or web stream you played and have that be translated, but I don't know if that is or will be possible. Beyond what I know.
