MarkoNY... I think what Tim meant was that if you are off to the west of a Cat One hurricane that is moving up the coast; you are on the weaker side of the storm. I thought Gloria was a Cat Two when it hit Long Island. Also, much of eastern Long Island was on the east side, or stronger side of the storm. So the damage was much worse to Long Island in Gloria than the damage the Carolinas get when a Cat One sails by the coast.
