I would never be able to stay for a hurricane either. It would be unique to be in the eye of a hurricane, but definitely won't be along the coast. Eventually I'll probably move inland some within the next few years and one might cross over.

Some of the newer houses around me are being built higher, but mine is low, around 8 feet. Tropical storms can have the water come up around four feet around me, likely a bit more if one stalled out. (issues with the bay here too)

A few houses on the water in my neighborhood have been torn down in the past few years. At least one of them was pretty low. They're all relatively low, but I think it was perhaps one of the lowest in the neighborhood. In the last few weeks the bottom of the first floor is done and it's a few feet higher I think than it was for the main floor, though the garage itself is a few feet lower than that with steps up to the main floor. At least when they tear down houses they build a bit higher. I would go as high as whatever the homeowner's association would allow. You would save over time when it comes to insurance. And a bit less likely to have flooding over the next several decades.
