...a low pressure center near the outer banks expected to develop into a major winter storm heading for new england...

blizzard warnings are in effect for the coastal areas of new jersey up through maine except nantucket island.

winter storm warnings are in effect for the panhandles of west virginia and maryland...much of interior new england down to the northern mid-atlantic...as well as for nantucket island.

winter weather advisories are in effect for portions of the ohio valley...mid-atlantic...and the southern appalachians...as well as a narrow area across interior new england.

a surface low pressure center with an estimated pressure of 1003 mb...29.62 inches...had formed near the outer banks of north carolina.  at 9 am est ... it was located about 80 miles east of the north coast of north carolina...beginning to intensify and move towards the northeast. a frontal boundary was moving across the southern appalachians and into the southeast.  the national weather service radars and surface observations indicated there was a swath of light snow was falling from the central appalachians to western pennsylvania and western new york. meanwhile...light snow had formed and had begun to overspread the northern mid-atlantic and long island new york.

the surface low off the north carolina coast is forecast to intensify very rapidly as it moves northeastward to a position just south of cape cod by tomorrow morning.  winds and snow are expected to continuously pick up in intensity through today...tonight and into early tuesday over southern new england and northern mid-atlantic region.  winds gusting to near hurricane-force together with zero visibility in heavy snow are forecast to impact parts of southern new england.  very impressive snowfall totals of 1 to 3 feet are predicted from the new york city area northeastward through southern and eastern new england by the time the storm departs late wednesday.  residents are advised to stay sheltered through the length of this powerful winter storm.
