Manitees dying from cold weather

Reuters reports that a record 699 manatees have died in Florida this year according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Research Institute.

Of those that died, 244 were attributed to cold temperatures and many of 271 undetermined deaths were also likely caused by cold weather.

They estimate only 5,000 manatees are left in Florida, so this is a significant reduction in the population.

At least 56 manatees died from cold weather in 2009.

The death told would have been higher except that manatees could congregate near power plants where there is some warmer water.

Orlando was 11.9 degrees below average for the first ten days of December.

While we have this clear evidence that recent cooling is causing a population decline in the Endangered manatee, there are some who are disputing the notion that global warming is causing a decline in polar bear populations in Canada.
