Odd that you post that...as I've been doing a lot of study on ice cover (extent and thickness) and ice ages lately.

Most surprising for me was that although we know the general causes of ice ages (astronomical) we don't thoroughly understand the triggers or why the shift to warm can be so abrupt. Also of interest is how greatly the frequency and amplitude of these cold periods have changed over geologic time (we're presently in a temperature yo-yo.)

Is Google a great research tool or what? Wow. (Youtube videos are nifty too.)

Creationists (believe it or not) claim ice was suddenly deposited from outer space; freezing the mammoths in their tracks. Physicists on the other hand, remind us that even ice zooming in from outer space would vaporize upon striking the atmosphere - with catastrophic heating results.

There's a great deal of material on this subject; including sunspots (or the lack thereof), and I think many would enjoy reading up on it.
