There was one subtropical storm that was not named because subtropical storms were not yet named at that time. There were two additional depressions before tropical depression 3 went on to become Hurricane Andrew.

We had one very short live tropical depression this year. It couldn't quite make it to a tropical storm. The only shot it had was when it was over the Gulf Stream.

I'm not sure about the statistics of when we see depressions, but I took a quick look from 1980 to the present and saw no seasons that saw the first depression come in August. 1998 got started July 27th with TD 1:

That was the closest, but hardly any other seasons came close. And of course 1998, like 1992, just shows it only takes one. And, both during El Nino periods.
