Re: How does this happen in today's "instant news" environment ?

I had read in some places about how some of the deaths occurred. Some in cars, some from people walking, some from when the power went out in their homes and people who died because they couldn't get to the hospital in time because of a medical condition. (and maybe other reasons too) It is sad with so much warning about such a significant storm that was expected that the death toll is this high. People should not have been outside for any reason. Even first responders should have been staying where they work during the period. No one should have been on the road. As for some of the deaths that occurred because they lost power, I can't remember if that was just due to losing heat or for other reasons. One of the deaths they profiled on the news tonight was someone who I think ran out of oxygen they were on in their home. A family member got to them, but they died before they could get them to the hospital.

I assume in some cases, such as of the cases where people were outside their home (and not in transit to the hospital for a medical emergency), the people thought this was just another storm in Buffalo like all the others they get. I know the politicians are fighting with each other on who to blame, in regard to not closing roads fast enough and the response, but I guess people should have really realized that they shouldn't have been outside during this storm. I don't have any familiarity with cold weather. I know for some people it's life. You have to go to work when it's snowing and really cold. I would have thought that people would have found out through some means that this was more serious than other storms, but I guess some people may be less informed of the news. I heard all about what was expected in Buffalo, from feet of snow, high winds and the possible storm surge flooding. But I follow the weather. I would have thought it would have been the topic of conversation there and people would have got the information somehow.

Now they're worried about the melting snow too and the flooding that could occur, though I see in that article where it says the National Weather Service says it might be minor.
