Pumps in New Orleans

In case anyone is interested, I heard just a little while ago on CBS that there are over 100,000 power outages in the New Orleans area, and I heard from a friend just a few minutes ago that the power is out in another neighborhood. The main municipal pumping station has its own electricity, independent of Entergy, thank goodness, but two of their engines are not functioning. They reportedly have adequate power now and are working on the other ones. Unfortunately, though, two of the sewerage pumps are not functioning, which puts them at risk of sewage backups. They have asked people not to use dishwashers or washing machines, although that will be a moot point shortly as they lose power. They are also asking people to minimize toilet flushing. My mother is in the hospital in Jefferson Parish, where the flooding is generally less severe, so she is in the best possible place for her given the circumstances. My other friends and family are trying to conserve their cell phone battery power, so I haven't heard anything from them for a few hours. I've been trying to find out about the the large pumps at the end of each outfall canal (17th, Orleans and London Ave), where the levees failed during Katrina. The Army Corps of Engineers built gates and pumps instead of fixing the defective walls, so it seems like there is still some risk. It is still freaking me out that this is happening on the 16th anniversary of Katrina.
