Georgia's emergency management, GEMA, and other agencies use amateur radio as a means of communicating with affected areas during tropical storms and hurricanes when other avenues fail .

Last September, we hams were fortunate that, although our high frequency bands were shut down by the solar activity, other technologies and bands of frequencies, that do not require a bounce off the atmosphere, were still available and worked flawlessly throughout the storm.  One more reason why the government sees the wisdom behind allocating so much radio spectrum to amateur radio.  What we do is more than just a hobby.

In October, we plan to carry out a statewide drill on this same scenario, communicating vital information in support of emergency responders during a hurricane.  The National Weather Service and a number of other state and local agencies will also be involved.
