I was hoping they weren't going to change the vortex message format this year. I'm going to have to code that now too for the recon system. (The changes are nice, I just didn't want to have to code them this year.) I heard about it previously but hadn't seen anything else about it. I see now that they did put something out about it April 13th, which is where the NHC copied that from:
http://www.nws.noaa.gov/os/notification/scn18-19vortex_messageaaa.htm

The NHC says June of 2018 but the link says "beginning on or around May 15, 2018." (when the East Pacific season starts)

I'll have to figure out how to allow all old observations and all new ones to be decoded. I guess I'll have to have the code look for extra letters, all the way to "U" for new messages. Also a lot of reordering of things in the vortex message.

I like the 48hr wind radii forecast too. When local stations show graphics the hurricane force wind field ends prematurely when the time period was that far out. Someone would have to explain that the radii are not given for that time period. I'm sure some meteorologists would not do that, so when a local station played the forecast track with the wind radii, people might believe there would be no hurricane force winds when there would actually be.

Having additional information in the public advisory is good too for the longer period. I like to read the technical NHC discussion, but maybe this will be in less technical speak that other people will find useful.
