Re: they have recon in right now

I don't think unmanned recon is likely to replace manned recon into storms. The NASA Global Hawk flies way above storms, not in them. While you could have remotely controlled planes designed to be able to handle flying into the eyewall, I think the chance of a communication issue would be a major enough problem that you might lose some of them. (too costly) I guess they could be smart enough to fly through the storm autonomously if communication was lost, and it's not like there would be a lot of other aircraft in the vicinity, but I think it would be a very long time before we might possibly see something like that. You could have someone on the ground determine when to launch a sonde or perhaps even automate that process in such a way that it happens automatically in the center and in the eyewall. I just don't see such an investment being likely to make any of that possible within a few decades.

As for other aircraft, I don't think there will ever be a lot of remotely piloted aircraft. The chance of communication issues and hacking are too great. You could design the aircraft to land themselves if communication is lost, but you would still have a hacking problem.

I like drones for a variety of uses, but things are going a little overboard with them. There is even a test to deliver fast food.
