Very sobering stuff, LawKat. This reminds me: I really need to take some photos of the beaches here in Naples, FL and share them here. I moved to Naples a month ago with my family, and when we went to the beach down here for the first time, my jaw dropped at the magnitude of the erosion that has occurred, likely due in large part to Hurricane Wilma. The beaches where we were living in the Tampa Bay area before moving down here all have exponentially more area to wander than the beaches down in Naples. The "beach" is really a relatively narrow strip of sand. When you look out onto the shore, it is quite clear how much farther out the beach once extended; there are areas where the Gulf obviously just overran the beach permanently. It seems as though Wilma reconfigured the geography of the SW Florida coastline. |
