Problem is...

Rarely do we prepare for the hurricane we get.

If we are totally prepared and everything went well it means you got a cat 1 or cat 2 hurricane that moved fairly fast. Trees everywhere took out the power grid, temporary disruptions of normal life from a week to two weeks while schools are reopened, signs fixed, new traffic signals ordered and FPL makes excuses for why so many people are without power.

A window or two need to be repaired if you didn't board up. Ficus tree needs to be trimmed off the back of the house. Everyone is okay and you are using up your canned food, granola bars, water and the kids want their internet back and are tired of crayons.

No one can really prepare for a Cat 4 or 5.

Andrew tore people's lives apart far inland where there was no discussion of evacuating..

If an Andrew like storm came through town your supplies are ruined or in someone's pool :(
You're lucky to be alive and you better hope the National Guard has already been deployed.

Being honest.

But we need to prepare... if the Andrew "LIKE" storm misses you and you got strong Cat 1.. Cat 2 winds with micro bursts... you will want the first aid supplies, the non perishable food and water and batteries will once again be important in your life.. if you don't have a generator.

What no one says is to take money and slowly put it into your "out of work fund" because most people lose at least a week if not two of work when the hair dresser place they work at is closed and no one can get there even if they have power. Stores are closed. some government offices are closed and those who do not have great benefits (most of the population) will be missing at least a week or work if not two.

The list seems overwhelming when people look at it but it's really not that hard.

Get a big tub of somekind. Throw stuff in there... bandaids, medicine, batteries, candles, flashlights... store food somewhere. it's not rocket science our parents and grandparents did it in the days before there were apps and message boards.

Old Miami Girl... the lines at Kwik Check and Food Fair were long and everyone bought junk food and canned food. And when trees fell down all the neighbors worked together to get the Avocado tree chopped down off of the neighbors house.

Honest.

Oh and everyone BBQed... whatever was defrosting in the freezer...
