Historic flooding forecast along Mississippi River

Bob Henson and Jeff Masters cover some of the tornadoes, blizzards, flooding and heat this week:

The Mississippi River could crest at its second highest point on record, about five feet below its 1993 record. Flash flooding has already been very deadly this week in addition to the tornadoes.

National Weather Service's Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service (AHPS):

Gauges Above Major Flood Stage: 45
Gauges Above Moderate Flood Stage: 113
Gauges Above Minor Flood Stage: 252

Mississippi River at St. Louis station from Masters' blog:

At the bottom of some of the station pages you can see what impacts certain levels of water have.

For tornadoes, people should have weather radios in these tornado prone regions. That way you don't have to keep up with the weather as much, which might be easy to forget during holidays. (although weather radios do not always work)  I suppose there are alerts you can get on your cell phone too.

For flooding, that is relatively easy. Don't drive on flooded roads. You never know if the road it still there or really how deep the water is, I don't care how well you know the area. And when you only need around one to two feet of fast moving water to carry away a car, and less for a person, it obviously doesn't take much for it to become dangerous.
