"So was it really a tornado?
Tornadoes in Australia are relatively rare weather events but can cause havoc if they hit built-up areas.
The Bureau of Meteorology says there are about 10 to 20 sightings a year in populated areas with about 60 or so tornadoes forming a year.
'There is obvious evidence that we have had a tornado go through Cronulla today,' said Alan Sharp, a meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology. 'There were gusts of 213km/h recorded at Cronulla and it was obvious from our radar that there was a tornado in that area.'"

"A tornado with wind speeds among the fastest ever recorded in Sydney has hit the southern beach suburb of Kurnell, the weather bureau says.

The Bureau of Meteorology said the destructive winds, measuring up to 213 kilometres per hour, had now moved offshore from Bondi Beach.

Forecaster Michael Logan said the wind speeds recorded were 'up there' with the fastest ever registered in the Sydney area."
