Katrina did not start or form south of Jamaica. She never was in the Caribbean at all. Katrina emerged from defunct Tropical Depression #10, which was a Cape Verde wave, and the regenerated system was then named Tropical Depression #13, as the system approached the Bahamas. A lot of the time, systems that seem to appear "out of nowhere" actually were CV waves that just made their quiet and uneventful way across the Atlantic before finally encountering an environment favorable enough to fire up. Even Hurricane Iniki, if you can believe it, was a Cape Verde wave. It never developed until it entered the Pacific, where it went on the infamy in Hawaii as a Cat 4.
