North of the equator cyclones rotate counterclockwise. South of the equator, clockwise.
Take a look at the World Meteorological Organization map here: http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/Advisories-RSMCs.html You can see the EQ line across. I don't know the statistics, but you can see that most of the cyclones occur in the northern hemisphere.

As for what is in the eye, those are lower level clouds in the eye. Here is a paper about them: http://andrew.rsmas.miami.edu/papers/KMS2002_MWR.pdf
At the start of that image cypress posted it has something in the eye that looks to be related to how the image was created. That happens in some image formats, especially when things are dark like that. |
