Adblock Plus ( https://adblockplus.org/ ) seems to work well for me. I think I still see sponsored posts though in the Facebook news feed. That addon, available in all major browsers, blocks ads on webpages and most ads in video. Some sites still shows ads in video though, like Hulu and CBS I believe.

I do like the ability to view all sorts of things at once in Facebook's news feed rather that going to different sites. I like a lot of news, science and weather stuff, so my news feed is mostly educational stuff that is usually not time sensitive. (or at least I don't use it that way, sometimes I might see something about bad weather that is a day or two old from a meteorologist or page I follow, so Facebook does have that kind of problem)

That Facebook experiment was crazy. I still can't believe they actually went through with that. I wonder if even 0.01% of people have ever read the terms and conditions on any of those major sites. Maybe a few more places in that decimal. I have to admit though, I've never read one of them either. I figure at least one person has and if it were that bad I would probably have seen something about it on the news. (and then that is where Facebook appeared trying to make some people purposefully sad)

One thing I do use is Twitter's search engine sometimes:
https://twitter.com/search-home
Obviously there is going to be a lot of junk in there, but sorting through all that I do find it useful sometimes.

I still don't have a cell phone yet. Everyone I know has one, but I still haven't found a great need for it. My old car broke and my new one apparently has Onstar for real emergencies without having to pay for it, so the only time that a cell phone would be most useful, somewhere along a road without a phone nearby, I would not need it. (The alternative could be a disposable cell phone in the glove compartment.)
