I wasn't sure. I have never thought about the need or heard about it. A lot of businesses have flat roofs and obviously they need to do it and it is much safer. (in this storm some roofs of that type have collapsed) But usually you don't have to worry about that for residential roofs. But after a few feet of snow perhaps that actually stay on the roof, it could get iffy. (a one story house might get nearly completely covered with a drift) I was looking at some stuff online and it talks about usually that is not a need for most normal snows. For the heavy snows it depends on depth and weight of the type of snow. (The warnings I see talk about having to be careful of not falling, concerns about roofs being more brittle in cold, about power lines, not trying to remove all the snow as you could damage your roof, etc. Basically hire a professional to do it if needed.) It depends on what the roof is designed to handle.

I didn't know they had such thing as a roof rake. I've never lived anywhere but Florida, so I'm rather clueless when it comes to these kinds of things. But I can tell that I definitely never want to live in a place where a roof rake would ever be needed. It looks somewhat easy to use, but I'm sure it depends greatly on the type of snow.
