Tropical storm force wind gusts are just offshore from Kauai according to the latest recon and are around Niihau according to the hurricane hunters which just flew over that island.
It looks like the small island of Niihau, to the west of Kauai, does have a chance in my opinion of getting hurricane force winds. It all depends on if Ana does actually turn or if the wind field expands.
The CPHC gives the island of Niihau a cumulative chance of 3% of getting 50 knot sustained winds (as of the 5am HST / 11am EDT advisory just out), but to be honest, their forecast has not been doing well as of late. They keep calling for the turn but it has not turned so far. |
