I had not thought about that until Jim's video. Plus, there are areas of Florida that simply have very little experience with hurricanes. The Tampa Bay and Jacksonville regions have very little experience with hurricanes. Those are huge population centers with little experience for significant storms. Even a lot of the Miami region remains fairly inexperienced to the catastrophic risk that exists. (It can get a lot worse than Wilma and going by the reaction of people in other areas after a major storm, some people probably thought Miami was directly hit by Andrew.) And then you have Lake Okeechobee, which is probably deceptively dangerous to a lot of people. I'm not sure how prepared the Florida Keys are. I think most would evacuate for a major storm, but they do seem to be getting more and more complacent. Parts of SW Florida, a lot of the panhandle and the Homestead area understand the risks, but I would say a lot of the state does not which is rather scary when you think about it.
