As of posting this, the 6.8 magnitude (USGS estimate) quake occurred at a depth of 348.5 km (216.6 miles).

Japan Meteorological Agency says a 7.0 with a depth of 370 km:

Reading the early news reports it doesn't seem like there was much impact on land due to the depth and distance from land.
