There have been storm systems in Mediterranean that "looked like" tropical cyclones on satellite, but which ships passed through encountering light winds.
There is only one from about 1995, where the storm system not only looked the part, but had winds of gale force at its center.
I think when the story was published, meteorologists believed that storms in the Mediterranean could spin up, if only very rarely, over cold water temps, and have tropical characteristics, due to the interaction of weather masses and winds from Africa, Europe and the Middle East.
Kind of like how storms spin up so fast in the Bay of Campeche, because of the bowl effect, but to a lesser degree. |
