I disagree. As someone who lived in the NY Metro area for more than 20 years, I think that reinforcing the pervasive denial up there about the area's vulnerability to hurricanes by evacuating millions of people for a storm that will clear the island by hundreds of miles would be disastrous. Yes, it is a tough call, but it is also the right one, holiday weekend or not.
