| Wikipedia has a chart that shows some of the differences in scales worldwide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropical_cyclone_scales#Comparisons_across_basins That shows how Australia's scale is much different than ours. That chart is imperfect though because the NHC uses 1 minute averages. But, it gives you an idea of the differences.
