Thanks Jac. That was a surprise.
I also examined your NAM against the most recent GFS (6hrs earlier run) and noticed some differences in the trough.
The GFS trough is neutral while the NAM trough is positively tilted (am not sure what this represents but suspect it means the Low center wants to move faster than its trailing front.)
Although the isobars are geographically similar in location over the southeast U.S. - the wind barbs with the NAM are faster. This I suspect is due to the NAM representing a slightly more intense Low (lower heights seen at 500mb over the Great Lakes area.)
It is fascinating to see the fine differences between models and model runs!
